TIIMS definition of an organization

The debate continues as to what determines the size of an organization: small, medium, large, very large, etc.

The Small Business Administration once defined “large” as a business with over 500 employees, while a U.S. Department of Commerce census categorized businesses with over 1,000 employees as “large.” This is further complicated by the fact that the type of business and the country it is located in must also be taken into consideration.

For our purposes, TIIMS is concerned only with what qualifies as an “organization,” regardless of how big or how small, and regardless of the number of employees. This is because once organizations reach a certain size most take on the characteristics found within almost all large organizations.

TIIMS defines an “organization” as any enterprise large enough that most workers don’t know each other personally, and/or where any given worker doesn’t have reason to interact with the majority of the other employees during any given day.
